Psychologists study the human mind and human behavior. Psychologists investigate the physical, cognitive, emotional, or social aspects of human behavior. Clinical psychologists often interview patients and give diagnostic tests. They may provide individual, family, or group psychotherapy and may design and implement behavior modification programs.

There are recognized courses in the field of Psychology. There are many institutes in India offering BSc & MSc programs in Psychology Sciences. The Bachelors program is of 3 years duration. The Masters program is of 2 years duration. Only individuals who have completed either or both these courses are eligible to be called as Psychologists. Many of them complete their PhD programs in specific areas.

The current role of psychologists and behavior specialists most often involves assessment, consultation, and development of intervention strategies. Psychologists and behavior specialists are often involved in providing functional analyses of problem behaviors; designing behavioral interventions; providing cognitive, adaptive, and social assessments; guiding the educational curriculum in these areas; and consulting with the rest of the educational team about educational strategies and interventions. Psychologists and behavior specialists are often involved in parent training and support as well.

Clinical Psychologists provides individual, family, or group psychotherapy and may design and implement behavior modification programs. They collaborate with physicians and other specialists to develop and implement treatment and intervention programs that the family can understand and comply with. They also study the physiological, cognitive, and social development that takes place throughout life with some specializing in behavior during infancy, childhood, and adolescence.

Educational Psychologists work with students within the school setting. They collaborate with teachers, Parents/guardian, and school personnel to create safe, healthy, and supportive learning environments for all students; address student's learning and behavior problems; improve classroom management strategies or parenting skills; assess students with learning disabilities and gifted and talented students to help determine the best way to educate them; and improve teaching, learning, and socialization strategies. They also may evaluate the effectiveness of academic programs, prevention programs, behavior management procedures, and other services provided in the school setting.

There are a variety of facilities in which these professionals work.

  • Hospitals/Clinics: There are many hospitals/clinics in which these professionals are employed with in the pediatric department. The children will be directly referred to them by doctors for assessment and therapy.
  • Rehabilitation centre: There are many public/private rehabilitation centres that employ psychologists.
  • Schools: Many schools today have counselors who help children to cope with various situations with in the school setting.
  • Private practice: In India private practice is very common where many therapists work independently. They may be working part-time in any of the facilities mentioned above along with private practice also.

•  A psychiatrist is a medical doctor. A psychologist may hold a doctoral degree (Ph.D.) and    be called "doctor"; but, is not a medical doctor.
•  Psychologists cannot prescribe medications. Only Psychiatrists can prescribe.
• Both Clinical Psychologists and Psychiatrists can provide psychotherapy and counseling     services.
