Doctors

Doctor's have regular contact with children before they reach school age. Such visits allow developmental and other health problems to be identified and treated early in a child's life. They being the key people in any health care service have the opportunity to be the first point of contact when parents have concerns about their child's development or behavior. They provide recommendations for screening infants and young children and intervening with families to identify developmental delays and disabilities. Whether a problem is medical or behavioral, or both, finding it early and treating it can greatly improve the child's chances of reaching his or her full potential for physical, mental, and social-emotional well-being. They are an integral part of a collaborative effort of an interagency, family-centered system of care where they refer the child and family to a specialist for further assessment and diagnosis, such as to a psychologist, speech-language therapist, occupational therapist, and/or physiotherapist.

The doctors most commonly consulted by parents are:

Pediatrician: A pediatrician provides medical services to infants, children, and adolescents and are trained in overall growth and development of children.

Neurologist : A neurologist identifies if there is a possible damage to brain functions.

Psychiatrist : A psychiatrist diagnoses and treats severe behavioural and emotional problems and will sometimes prescribe medication.
